McDermott's pledge error blamed on a childhood moment. Jim McDermott says he forgot to include the words "under god" when leading the House of Representatives in reciting the Pledge of Allegiance. For shame Jim, next time do it on purpose.
Facts: The Pledge of Allegiance, originally written in the late 1800's, did not include the words "under god". These words were added by a Republican congress in 1954 at the height of the McCarthy era. The 9th Circuit Court of Appeals has ruled the phrase unconstitutional.
Isn't it time we reaffirmed America's commitment to freedom of and from religion and struck these words. All Americans deserve to be able to recite the Pledge without having their personal beliefs challenged.
